Mold Designer

Position:                      Mold Designer                                     

Job Summary:            Design plastic injection molds from customer supplied 3D CAD data with an emphasis on

quality and robust designs that are manufacturable. Typical designs are complex with 3D contoured parting lines, and mold actions. A customer focused attitude, good communication skills demonstrating internal drive to complete tasks on time and according to customer’s expectations objectives. Periodic designs for die cast dies and compressions molds as well

as part designs. Occasional design will be required for manufacture recommendations.  

Responsibilities:

  • Lead mold design kick-off meetings and accept input for design and mold build
  • Plan and schedule jobs to meet quoted hours and delivery dates, prepare needed prints and instructions to coordinate work needed from outside vendors with Shop Supervisor
  • Clearly communicate the most efficient method of manufacture to others working on your design
  • Perform all inspection procedures prior to mold shipment
  • Complete and verify adherence to company design criteria/checklists prior to mold design completion
  • Assess completed jobs for improvements with necessary personnel following mold shipment
  • Communicate with Customer engineering staff to resolve design questions and challenges
  • Communicate with Shop Supervisor to maintain efficiencies of shop work flow

Requirements:

  • Knowledge of molds and molding practices (i.e. plastic injection molds, metal injection molds, die cast dies)
  • Proficient at running a 3D mold design software
  • Have excellent mathematical skills and mechanical aptitude
  • Knowledge and use in geometry, trigonometry, shop mathematics and calculator proficiency
  • Good written and interpersonal oral communication skills, good computer skills
  • Strong problem solving and trouble shooting skills
  • Utmost attention to detail, taking pride in your work
  • Work cooperatively with fellow employees in a team environment
  • Overtime required to meet project deliveries and customer requirements
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area
  • Additional responsibilities as assigned by Shop Supervisor

Preferred Knowledge/Experience:

  • Knowledge of Mastercam Design for reviewing mold designs and shop drawings creation
  • Knowledge of Missler Top Solid / Top Mold design software

Job Qualifications:

  • High school diploma
  • Minimum five years bench work experience
  • Experience in building all types of injection molds
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, deadlines and high levels of stress
